人之生也柔弱, 其死也堅强. 萬物草木之生也柔脆, 其死也枯稿. 故堅强者, 死之徒; 柔弱者, 生之徒. 是以兵强則不勝, 木强則兵. 故堅强處下, 柔弱處上.

Nhân chi sinh dã nhu nhược, kì tử dã kiên cường. Vạn vật thảo mộc chi sinh dã nhu thuý, kì tử dã khô cảo. Cố kiên cường giả, tử chi đồ; nhu nhược giả, sinh chi đồ. Thị dĩ binh cường tắc bất thắng; mộc cường tắc chiết. Cố kiên cường xử hạ; nhu nhược xử thượng.

Người ta khi sinh ra thì mềm yếu, khi chết đi thì cứng rắn. Cỏ cây khi sinh ra thì mềm yếu, khi chết đi thì khô héo. Cho nên cứng rắn là cùng phe với cái chết, mềm yếu là cùng phe với sự sống. Thế nên binh mạnh tất sẽ diệt, cây cứng tất sẽ gãy. Cứng mạnh ở dưới, mềm yếu ở trên.

1. 1. Man at his birth is supple and weak; at his death, firm and

strong. (So it is with) all things. Trees and plants, in their early growth, are soft and brittle; at their death, dry and withered.

1. Thus it is that firmness and strength are the concomitants of

death; softness and weakness, the concomitants of life.

1. Hence he who (relies on) the strength of his forces does not

conquer; and a tree which is strong will fill the out-stretched arms, (and thereby invites the feller.)

1. Therefore the place of what is firm and strong is below, and that

of what is soft and weak is above.
