道生之, 德畜之, 物形之, 勢成之. 是以萬物莫不尊道而貴德. 道之尊, 德之貴, 夫莫之命而常自然. 故道生之, 德畜之, 長之, 育之, 亭之, 毒之, 養之, 覆之. 生而不有, 爲而不恃, 長而不宰. 是謂玄德.

Đạo sinh chi, Đức súc chi, vật hình chi, thế thành chi. Thị dĩ vạn vật mạc bất tôn Đạo nhi quý Đức. Đạo chi tôn, Đức chi quý, phù mạc chi mệnh nhi thường tự nhiên. Cố Đạo sinh chi, Đức súc chi, truởng chi, dục chi, dưỡng chi, đình chi, độc chi, dưỡng nhi phúc chi. Sinh nhi bất hữu; vi nhi bất thị; trưởng nhi bất tể. Thị vị Huyền Đức.

Đạo sinh ra, Đức nuôi dưỡng, Vật hình thành, Thế hoàn tất. Thế nên muôn vật không gì là không tôn Đạo mà quý Đức. Đạo được tôn, Đức được quý là vì không ai ép buộc mà thường tự nhiên như thế. Cho nên Đạo sinh ra, Đức nuôi dưỡng; làm cho lớn lên, nuôi nấng, làm cho thành tựu, chín muồi, nuôi dưỡng và che chở. Sinh ra mà không chiếm hữu, làm mà không cậy công, lớn mạnh mà không cai quản. Đó gọi là Đức huyền diệu.

1. 1. All things are produced by the Tao, and nourished by its

outflowing operation. They receive their forms according to the nature of each, and are completed according to the circumstances of their condition. Therefore all things without exception honour the Tao, and exalt its outflowing operation.

1. This honouring of the Tao and exalting of its operation is not the

result of any ordination, but always a spontaneous tribute.

1. Thus it is that the Tao produces (all things), nourishes them,

brings them to their full growth, nurses them, completes them, matures them, maintains them, and overspreads them.

1. It produces them and makes no claim to the possession of them; it

carries them through their processes and does not vaunt its ability in doing so; it brings them to maturity and exercises no control over them;--this is called its mysterious operation.
